GEO vs SEO: What Changed, and What Got Rebranded

Most of what gets sold as "GEO" is SEO with a new label and a bigger invoice. Here is the honest comparison, including the part that actually is different.

GEO and SEO are about ninety percent the same work. SEO builds a site that search engines want to rank. GEO builds a site that AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews) will surface accurately when someone asks a question in your category. Both start from the same foundation: a clear, well-structured, genuinely useful website. The models are reading the same web Google reads. They are not running a separate internet you have to be admitted to.

Where they actually diverge
The remaining ten percent is real. Four things change when your audience is an AI summarizer instead of a person scanning links:

The output. Search gives the user ten links to choose from. An answer engine reads the page for them and writes one answer. You are either in it or invisible. No second page to recover on.
The signals. Backlinks still matter, but brand mentions across third-party sources matter more. (Ahrefs found a 0.66 correlation between how often a brand is mentioned around the web and how often AI cites it.)
Freshness. Models favor content that signals you are still active and still authoritative. A stale page reads as abandoned.
Measurement. SEO tracks rankings and traffic. GEO tracks prompts: ask the four models what your buyers ask, then score whether you were mentioned, where, and how accurately. Google Search Console will never tell you what Claude said about you.

What it actually changes in practice
Less than the rebrand crowd wants you to believe. You keep publishing content that explains what you do and how you differ. You keep the site fast and the architecture sane. What you add is contained: weight your earned-media effort toward the sources models cite in your category, hold a real refresh cadence, and start measuring how you show up when buyers ask an AI. Same discipline, slightly different audience. No separate agency required.

FAQ

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO is an extension of SEO, not a replacement. The fundamentals that always mattered (clear content, strong architecture, real authority) still drive AI visibility. What changed is the audience: an AI model now sits between your content and your buyer.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO in plain English?

SEO optimizes for a person clicking from a results page. GEO optimizes for an AI engine summarizing your content into one answer. Most of the work overlaps. The differences are emphasis: GEO weights brand mentions, freshness, and educational depth more heavily.

Do I need a different agency for GEO than for SEO?

You shouldn't. An agency that frames GEO as a brand-new discipline is usually selling a relabeled version of the same work. Look for one that treats both as a single practice and can show you real measurement.

Does schema markup help with GEO?

Yes, but it is not a silver bullet. Schema makes your content easier for models to parse and quote accurately. It does not decide whether you get cited. The substance of the content matters more.

How do I know if my brand has good GEO?

Run a real audit, not a one-off vibe check. Ask Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini the questions your buyers actually ask, then score whether you are mentioned, whether the description is accurate, and how competitors compare. A real audit uses eighty to a hundred prompts across all four models.

How long does GEO take to work?

The same timeline as SEO, because it is mostly the same work. Three to nine months for measurable movement, a year or more for results that compound. Anyone promising AI answers next week is selling a miracle diet.

What is the single highest-leverage thing I can do today?

Publish clear, educational content that explains what your product is, how it differs, and where it sits in the market. Pair it with a quarterly refresh habit and earned media aimed at the sources AI cites for your competitors.
